Helping A Child With ADHD Learn

Barry Myers

Just because your child suffers from ADHD, that doesn't mean they don't have the potential to develop their mind. However, the typical school environment is not one that's conducive to children with ADHD. Here are some things you can do to make the learning process easier for your child.

Choose an ADHD School

The best thing you could do is look into ADHD schools. The classrooms are set up in a way that makes it easier for children with ADHD to master their education. There is a higher number of teachers per student so that teachers are better able to redirect a student who is having trouble staying focused. The teachers will have specific training in child development relating to ADHD. This makes them more sympathetic educators who have the skills to deal with behaviors that other teachers might not accept in the classroom.

The structure of the school day will likely be different as well, with lessons of a smaller duration and more breaks for activity. The learning styles these teachers employ could also be different, leaning more towards kinesthetic or auditory learning techniques rather than reading, which many ADHD students struggle to stay focused on. In short, these schools make it much easier for your child to take in the knowledge they need. And the student will be around other children with ADHD and similar conditions, which creates a more positive and accepting environment.

Make Sure They Have Plenty of Exercise

Exercise is not only a stress reliever, but it's something that helps develop focus. When your child with ADHD gets plenty of exercise, it can help curb restlessness and make them a better learner and listener.

Review Schoolwork at Home

Again, learners with ADHD benefit more from small chunks of learning that are spread out. That means that, if you can do some learning at home, you can spread out the educational day even further. ADHD schools will need to provide more downtime from direct schoolwork for children, and so the school day could continue at home with your reviewing material that was taught in class that day.

Help Your Child Deal with Emotions

There are a lot of distracting emotions that come with ADHD, especially if your child has been misunderstood by teachers in the past. Perhaps some counseling would help them learn the best behaviors and ways to deal with negative emotions that come up in the classroom, which will give them more energy to focus on learning.

I knew that I needed to do something to make my career a little better, so I started looking around for a school that offered the kind of program I was looking for. I was able to find a school that really offered a powerful program, and the counselors were really easy to work with.
